To London for Soap and Glory

IMG_2284

I haven’t been writing in a while. Why? Because I have been planning and working on getting ready to go to Europe, where I have been for the entire month of May. Holy Moly it was amazing! We went to Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal, and I seriously wish that I could live there. Seriously. I am thinking about doing a packing blog post that will be coming up pretty soon, so that will be pretty awesome (I hope).

While in London, we of course went to Boots (if you don’t know what Boots is, it is a fantastic pharmacy/drugstore in the U.K.), that I have been dying to go to for Soap and Glory products. Why? Because they are amazing. So, of course, they fortunately had their very famous 2 for 3 sale and I picked up 3 amazing products that I am so excited to try. And here they are:

IMG_3949

1. Pulp-Friction Foamy Fruity Body Scrub. This smells absolutely glorious and I cannot wait to use it. I love to make my skin feel super exfoliated and smooth. I have slightly bumpy and kind of dry skin, so I find it super helpful to scrub off that layer of dead skin cells. And as an added bonus the Soap and Glory scrubs are extremely moisturizing also, which is fantastic and not super common with all scrubs. I don’t use body scrubs every day, but at least once a week I will, especially when I am having a nice shower at the end of the day or before I night out. Unfortunately, if I love this stuff I am unsure as to whether it is in Canada or not, but I haven’t seen it. So I will have to look.

IMG_3950

2. Smooth Star Breakfast Scrub. This is even more amazing, if you can believe it. (And I just realized while writing this post that I just bought 3 body scrub products. Well, why not when they are the best. I don’t even care). Anyways, this particular scrub actually smells like maple cookies, and even smells moisturizing. I am so excited to start using this one as well because I have never even heard of this particular scrub. Yum. I almost want to eat this product because it smells so amazing. If you find it, open it up and smell, and you will know what I am talking about.

3. Lastly, I bought another Flake Away Scrub. I actually already have bought and used this scrub, which is how and why I completely fell in love with Soap and Glory products. This was the stuff that opened such a love that I can’t even tell you how much I am loving this line. It smells amazing, and all of the packing is different shades of pink and evokes the retro love that I have in life. I just feel like an adorable 50’s modern house wife when I see this stuff. It is awesome. Back to the love of this particular product, when I opened this product when I got home, I realized that they had actually moderately changed this formula. The colour of the product that I have at home is actually a bright yellow and kind of stains my tub a bit until I clean my bathroom with this wonderful colour. However, the new stuff smells the exact same and looks similarly scrubby, but is brownish in colour now. I am not upset. The yellow was fun, but I wouldn’t mind using a darker colour, just as long as the product stays the same. This is seriously the scrub that I don’t even feel like I have to moisturize after using it because it makes my skin feel like buttery soft and so smooth. I tell my husband to feel different parts of my body because they just feel so nice (and I don’t hear any complaints). I seriously love this stuff, and it is worth the $18 to $20 that they are at home.

I need to go and have a bath now that I am so excited to use this stuff. If you haven’t tried any Soap and Glory scrubs, I highly recommend them. I love them so much that I traveled all of the way to London just to get them. Now that is love.

Holy Grail Haircare Products

It has taken me a long time to get my hair the way that I really want it. My hair is dyed strawberry blonde, and is fairly long, and very curly. My hair isn’t very coarse, but is kind of fine, and wispy. It can look very nice and curly, or it just looks quite frizzy. So I have a few products that help me tame the beast.

image

1. MoroccanOil Curl Defining Cream. This product was an amazing find for me that I found in a salon and decided to try. This has changed my hair so much for the better. It really defines curls, and reduces the frizz in my hair. I love this stuff. It is a very creamy product, and you don’t need to use a lot of it (and it lasts such a long time). I use it after I have washed my hair and slightly towel-dried hair. I pump some into my hand (about a nickel sized amount), rub it between my hands, and scrunch it through my hair. I part my hair off the centre part, to the left, and then I leave it. I don’t blow-dry my hair very often, and I certainly don’t after this product because I find that it does make my hair a little bit more frizzy, so I just let it air dry. I love this product.

2. kms California Moist Repair Therapy Treatment. This product is for damaged hair, but I find that it just adds to much more moisture to my hair and makes it super silky. My hair was going through a bit of a dry period in the winter, so I bought this at the recommendation from my hairdresser, and I love it. I don’t wash my hair a whole lot, so when I do I like a very heavy conditioner (to last me 3 to 4 days). No, I don’t need to wash my hair that often at all. Being kind of a drier person, my hair takes a lot to get very greasy. Anyways, if your hair is super dry, or you just need a very moisturizing hair mask/conditioner, than you need this product (plus, they are all safe for colour-treated hair).

3. Pantene Pro-V Hairspray Classic-All Hair Types. This is such a nice hairspray that doesn’t give a lot of hold, but gives just enough to control frizz, and tame your hair. I hate hairspray that makes your hair feel like helmet, and makes it very hard and stiff. I like how this product really makes it very touchable and soft, while still keeping it mostly in place. It is great for curls.

4. MoroccanOil Treatment for fine or light-coloured hair. I use this when I am going for my natural hair. I have been using this product for a few years, and it makes my hair very soft and silky. I use it when I am have straightened my hair and need to tame some fly-aways, or just after I have washed my hair and I comb this through and let my hair do whatever. Or I put it in and then put my hair in a bun and let it dry. It makes my hair stay somewhat curly, and easy looking. I don’t know what I would do without it.

5. Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner. I got this in an Ipsy Bag a little while ago, and I love this stuff. I still haven’t gone out to buy the full-sized bottle because I haven’t gone through this one just yet. This product is great for when I straighten my hair for sure. It makes it so soft and silky, and I don’t know how I have lived so long and never used it. You use it on wet/towel-dried hair, and comb it through. If you have never used this product. You need to!

6. Lastly, the Healthy Sexy Hair Spray Clay. I also got this product in an Ipsy Bag, and I take this with me to revitalize my curly hair. For second day hair, this product is amazing. It really gives your hair more volume, and makes it look fresh. Plus, it makes your hair smell amazing! I will definitely be buying the larger version of this product because I have realized that I have just run out.

So, there are just a few of my most loved haircare products. I realize that I have a few more than I really thought that I did, but I love all of these. If you have any other recommendations for me that would be appreciated for sure. Thanks for reading!

The Body Shop

image

The Body Shop had 50% off a few weeks ago! I love when this happens and I have a need for getting some new products. I haven’t gotten Body Shop products in ages, and I have found that The Body Shop have been having so many good deals lately. So I went a little crazy and bought maybe a few more products that I probably ought to. Is 9 too many? I have tried most of them so far, so heres a review in order of likes.

image

1. Papaya Body Butter – I have been covering my whole body in this every night for the past few nights. It smells so fruity and is so moisturizing. When I wake up my skin feels so soft and buttery. Plus my pajamas smell lovely too.

2. Coconut Body Scrub – I have to say that I love body scrubs. If there is anything worth using in the shower, it is a scrub. Coconut just makes it smell like summer, the beach, and being a teenager. I used to wear Coconut Body Butter every date night as a teen and I love that smell.

3. Loofahs – I bought 3 of them. Is that too many? They were $1.50, and you can’t get much cheaper than that for even a drugstore loofah. These ones are infinitely better. They are thicker, and lather soap better, and I find that they do last a lot longer too. Plus, they are in this beautiful blue colour. I should have bought more. (Actually, they are called Refining Bath Lilies, haha).

4. Mango and Papaya Shower Gel – These smell absolutely amazing and I love the way that it makes my skin feel. I find that sometimes with shower gels they can leave your skin feeling slightly dry, especially in the winter. However, I don’t find that with The Body Shop shower gels. At all. They are great.

5. Pink Grapefruit Body Scrub – Out of everything fruity, I love the smell of pink grapefruit. As you can tell with some of the other moisturizers that I like, pink grapefruit will be the one that I am drawn to the most.

6. Satsuma Body Butter – I love this scent and I am so happy that I got this one in this a travel size so that I can take this around with me everywhere. So that I can really add to the plethora of hand creams to bring around in my purse and make it infinitely heavier. I love it.

I can’t wait to use all of these up and buy more. I should have bought more.

New Products in January

I have been working this whole weekend, and I should be doing laundry right now, but I got inspired to write a blog post and went with it. Currently, I am watching Zoella on Youtube. I love her. Just is so adorable and I love

In the beginning of January there are always new products that come out and I love that. I like trying new products, because you never know what you are going to like. Also, do you ever feel like when you buy a product, and you keep using it just because you don’t have anything better? For instance, I have been using the Maybelline BB Cream, and to be honest, I don’t really like it a whole lot. It makes my skin look “ok”, and I find it makes me look really pale. It is the BB cream that is supposed to match your skin. Maybe I really am that pale and don’t want to admit it? Maybe.

image

1. Anyways, I bought something new that should kind of work like a BB cream, but is actually a foundation. (So, I completely thought that this was a BB cream, but when I started looking more at the package, I realized that it is a foundation. That makes sense. I will explain). I bought the Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation in the the shade 100 Ivory, which turned out to be a perfect colour for me. I always like to match my skin to what I am when I am pale. I don’t tan very well, and I am better off to buy a foundation that matches my skin 70% of the year. I know some people buy more than one to match when they are more tanned. That isn’t me. Why waste your money? When do you know when you become less tanned? You could run into some trouble there.

I should probably talk about the product. I really like it. We can move on now (j/k). It feels very light, but still like you are wearing a creamy moisturizer. A little goes a long way with this product I have found. You can use too much, and you really don’t need to. It blends out really well and I have found that it doesn’t really smudge very easily, like when you wipe your face and you find foundation on your fingers (doesn’t really happen). I really like the packaging as well, and I appreciate that it comes in a tube (I hate bottles), so that you can control how much comes out. Mostly. It doesn’t make my face look greasy, or dry, and the coverage is great. It definitely covered up my red spots quite well. I just used a small amount of light concealer under my eyes and over top some more angry red spots.

image

2. I went out and got the much talked about Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser. To be honest, I know that I just bought the Benefit Porefessional not that long ago, but this one came out and I really wanted to try it. I know that people compare the Baby Skin more to the Smashbox primer, and I agree that it doesn’t feel or look at all like the Benefit product. I even used this one on my husband in different areas of his face to try to see the difference between the two (he actually let me, which was pretty awesome). To be honest, the Benefit product did work a little better to blur your pores, but I like the consistency of the Baby Skin. It is a little more lightweight, and doesn’t really feel like you are wearing anything on your skin. It does a decent job of blurring your pores, but it isn’t perfect. I do like that it is less than half of the price of the Porefessional, so I would be more likely to use it on a daily basis and not worry about it running out too fast. Plus, the colour of the tube is wonderful. Actually, both are in a similar colour family. I just like the packaging of products really. What do you need to draw me in? Something nice to look at. There. I said it.

I didn’t really get a huge amount of products, but I did find ones that I had researched a lot and were very interested in trying. I will definitely continue to use them and they are perfect to travel with.

Speaking of travel (nice segway eh?), my husband and I have booked our next trip! We are going to Ireland, Spain, and Portugal in May! I have wanted to go to these places for such a long time. I really didn’t want to stop travelling until I had gone and now we are going! My husband booked the flights yesterday and we will be spending a few days in London, then off to Dublin, and home from Lisbon, Portugal. I will give you more details when the planning gets more intense.

My Morning Skincare Routine

I have really gotten into the habit of washing my face in the morning and at night more recently (a little late I suppose), but better late than never! I don’t use anything really fancy on my face, because I really don’t like to use a lot of heavy products. I have pretty much combination type of skin where I have a tendency to get really dry around my nose and on my cheeks, but I can get very oily on my t-zone, especially directly on my nose and sometimes my chin.

image

I start with using the Freemans Grapefruit Facial Scrub, which I massage all over my face. I have found since using this that my skin is more smooth and I have less black heads and much fewer clogged pores. I have never had extremely smooth skin, especially on my face, but since using this for sure I have noticed such a difference. This is certainly an abrasive scrub, but not to extent that it is painful. The scrubs in this exfoliator are fine, and I don’t find that it bothers my skin, and I have very sensitive skin. It makes me feel more like I am really cleansing and purifying my skin. Plus, I love grapefruit, so I get the best of everything.

image

Next, I use my favourite skin cleanser that I have been using for the better of about 5 years is the Spectro Jel Cleanser for Blemish-Prone Skin, which my husband actually turned me on to using. I have never had much luck with cleansers. I have tried the Philosophy Skin Cleanser with the moisturizer, but this broke me out a lot, so I stopped using it. I am always very hesitant to try new cleansers for this very reason. I think that if you are using something that works really well, why change anything? All that you can do is add to it!

I have yet to really find a toner that I really like, since I find that toners generally are very drying, and I already have fairly dry skin, especially in the winter. I don’t like to keep my morning routine very complicated, and I don’t use very expensive products. You can get the scrub for about $5 at London Drugs (and they usually have them on sale), and the cleanser I can get at Walmart for about $12 for the big pump. Really, I am not spending a lot. I don’t like to keep things very complicated for sure.

image

Then I finish off my face with just a simple moisturizer. In the summer I use the Coppertone Oil Free Sunscreen Lotion for the Face. I really like this moisturizer because it doesn’t break me out, it blends in beautifully, and it has the added bonus of being SPF 60. I started using this about 2 years ago, and even on really sunny days in the winter I will sometimes use this for sure. It also doesn’t run in my eyes when I sweat, which I find a lot of face sunscreens do, so that is a big plus for me.

image

Every other time I use the La Roche-Posay Rosaliac UV Riche Anti-redness Hydrating Cream for my moisturizer. This is the most expensive product that I use for my face, and I do find that it does reduce the amount of redness in my face. I started using this maybe about 9 months ago because I was really looking for a moisturizer that wasn’t heavy and also kept my skin from becoming very dry. When I was looking for a good moisturizer all of the ones that I was finding really left my skin feeling parched, so when I found this one I was very happy. No, it isn’t overly expensive, and usually London Drugs will have deals so that I can buy it on sale. I love the way that this really soaks into the skin well, and I don’t have to use a lot. I am not totally shut off to other moisturizers, but since I have very red and sensitive skin, I am very picky.

And that is my morning skincare routine. Not overly complicated, even though I seem to go on and on about what I use, but I am just really enjoying my products right now. If anyone has a good suggestion for daily eye cream I am totally for some suggestions! My nighttime routine will be coming soon as well. Thanks for reading!

Sephora and Ulta Favourites

Sephora and Ulta Favourites

image

What can I say about makeup? Well…lets just say not a whole lot. To be perfectly honest, I am certainly no expert, and I am definitely not trained in this subject matter for sure. I like to try new things and wear makeup, but I am much more of someone who will spend more money on foundations and concealers, as opposed to anything else really. It’s because I am getting old. I swear that is the reason. It feels like one day you wake up and you just see so many more lines around your eyes and dullness in your face. Yikes! Where is time going? Onto the subject at hand…I recently went to Ulta and Sephora in Portland (no sales tax!), and told myself that I was allowed to spend money on items that are a little more pricey because I save on tax. (Does it really make that much of a difference considering the exchange, not really…but I can justify that it does and that is all that matters). I picked up eyeshadows, eyeliners, concealer, and mascara, which I have been using for a few weeks and finally got around to writing a review for them. Here goes.

1. Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette – I got this palette from Ulta, and I debated getting the larger palette, but who really has any space for that? That thing is huge! Plus it has colours that I don’t think that I would use. Beautiful, but not super useful for my life. That being said, to be perfectly honest, I really can’t imagine that I have gone this long in my life without buying some really expensive and beautifully pigmented eyeshadows. These eyeshadows feel like butter. So soft, and they go on your eyelid like a dream. Plus, they are matte, which blows my mind, considering that most shadows these days are sparkly or shimmery. Is that just me? (This is with the exception of Venus, but that is a wonderfully “bright without washing you out” colour). I start by putting Foxy all over my lid (which is a soft yellow colour), and then use Naked 2 and Faint in the crease and at the outer corner of my lid. I do this as my everyday kind of look these days. I love it. They are beautiful, compact, super pigmented, and well worth the money. (The palatte also comes with a huge mirror too! Bonus!).

image
This picture really does not do the palette justice whatsoever. This product is really amazing! (And I tried to swatch it, but failed horribly. I apologize).

2. Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Liner – I bought these bad boys in 3 different colours because I had really heard such wonderful things about them. Everyone raves about them, and for good reason (they are very difficult to come off – I know this because I swatched them on my hand and had a very difficult time removing them). I picked them out in Nude, Brown, Deep Blue, and a Shadowstick in Blackmail. (Technically not a liner, but will be used as one). These are beautifully inexpensive, they have a good colour selection, although I wish that there were more. (I realize as I am writing this that I forgot to include a picture of the Navy liner, and of course I have been using that one the most). I love how smooth these liners go on, and you really don’t have to press very hard to get a lot of product. They smudge nicely as well. I use the Nude liner on my waterline only, which I find really opens my eyes a lot; and I use the Navy and Brown liners pretty much daily. Honestly, I haven’t used the black liner just yet, but you can tell my husband to take me out for a nice dinner so that I can use it. It is not that I am opposed to black liner during the day, but since I am so fair I find that it makes me look harsh.

image

3. NARS Creamy Concealer in Vanilla– Love this stuff! Seriously, I have heard nothing but good things about this concealer, and it sure does live up to all of the hype. The wonderful thing about this concealer is that it covers beautifully. I have such a hard time with dark circles under my eyes that I just look tired all of the time. It is great to finally have a concealer that really does a good job at covering these up. Sure, it isn’t perfect (but then again I think that it is a bit much to expect to grow younger), but I really like it. Plus, it doesn’t crease on me a lot. A little bit, but barely noticeable, which I think is basically expected. It is creamy, expensive, and does a great job with concealing. Definitely a good purchase for sure.

image

4. Benefit They’re Real! Mascara – To start off with, this is $30 mascara. Considering that Maybelline sells theirs for about $5 – 12, this is a lot of money for what it is. I first got a sample of this from Sephora one year for a birthday gift (I think), and I loved it. It does work really well at getting all of your lashes, and really is a nice mascara. So, I bought this about 6 months ago. I use it almost everyday, and it is still going strong. It doesn’t feel as though it is running out or drying up yet. I used this on a trip that I went on with my husband, and it was so unbelievably wet initially, that it would get on my under eye area so easily that it happened probably every day. That being said, it was all that I brought, and I used it anyways. I will then recommend to you that should that happen to you, try to let it dry out for a week or 2 after opening it. I do really like this mascara, but I don’t think that I would purchase it again. I can’t justify spending that much on mascara, although this does work really well, Maybelline mascaras work just as well.

image

5. What is in that little plastic jar you ask? I got a sample of Benefit The POREfessional Primer, while I was at Sephora. This is my first experience with a primer, and I quite like it. It makes my skin feel very soft, and does reduce the look of my pores a fair bit. I do find that it keeps my concealer and powder/foundation on my face really well too. I use it almost every day, and I do really like it. I think that I am going to have to bite the bullet and buy this stuff as soon as I run out of my sample. I don’t use a whole lot of it, so it has actually lasted me about 1 month so far and I still have some left. So, I know that it will last a while for sure. I know that it is $39, but I guess that that is a small price to pay for smaller pores. Is there another primer that you like that I should try before buying this one?

*Note to self, do not try to say something about putting up a post on a day that you know that you are really busy. Later in the week is a perfectly normal and realistic comment.

So yeah…I will have a new post up hopefully in a few days (also, a good thing to say). Thanks for reading! L.
